What happened last year was only an accident. After a disappointing season, mitigated somewhat by its participation for the first time ever in the regular phase of the Champions League, Rosenborg BK once again won its twentieth National League Championship. Despite this, last season was catastrophic for the Trondheim players, who have not participated in any European competitions; quite a black mark for a club that is used to winning titles in Norway and confronting important rivals in the best football stadiums in Europe. The last time it participated in the Champions League, its rival was Real Madrid. This year, after winning the Norwegian league, it now has the chance to be classified for the regular phase of the European Champions League.
Rosenborg has undergone a complete reorganisation over the past twelve months. Following its poor season in 2005, the BK that visited Maspalomas last year was quite different to the one that won the third place in the 2005 edition. In 2007, we will see a new Rosenborg; a younger team. That is another of the characteristics of BK Rosenborg that will be visiting Maspalomas this year. A group of young players, supported by veterans such as Stensaas, Riseth, Strand or Solli, who are familiar faces in the Maspalomas International Football Tournament.
The style of this team, which is a regular participant of the best European winter tournament, responds to perfection to the classic design of a team from northern Europe. Strength, hard work, speed and directness, with no in-betweens. A standard 4-4-2 , with little room for adornments in the midfield and fast centre forwards who are used to getting things done quickly and well. Its key asset it is tactical discipline.
The stars
The best known player of Rosenborg BK left the club after many years of faithful service. Brattbak was the man who scored the goals of the club from Trondheim for many years. However, he has made way for others. After ten years of absence from the club that offered him the chance to play in the Eredivisie in Nordica football, Steffen Iversen, aged 29, has now signed up for three years with his old club, with the promise of contributing a great many goals. In 2004 and 2005, the former centre forward of Tottenham Hotspur FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC played in the Vålerenga IF. His seven goals in 21 matches helped the Oslo team to win the title. However, Iversen has now returned to the club in which he scored ten goals in 25 matches in 1996, which opened up the doors to the British league. He is one of the best players in Norway.
