The king of the mists
The Garajonay National Park is a top spot for discovering the mysteries of the laurel forest
The laurel forest is a genuine antiquity. The Canary Islands provide a final refuge for this magical forest, which once covered the entire Mediterranean basin for most of the tertiary era. However, it has since been limited to less than a thousand hectares on the Canary Islands where the climate and humidity provide favourable conditions for growth. From a botanical point of view, this surviving forest is of incalculable value. Aesthetically, it offers one of the most breathtaking spectacles of the islands; a evergreen forest where the mists reign supreme. The Garajonay National Park in La Gomera provides one of the finest examples of this mythical forest.

Garajonay is a plateau situated in the central mountain range of La Gomera. Here, in a area of only 948 hectares, at a height of between 800 and almost 1,500 metres above sea level, this mythical forest can be seen in all its glory. The area was declared a national park in 1981 and provides a perfect habitat for this botanical species. This strip of land is home to a sea of clouds, created by the flow of moisture from the Atlantic that condenses to fall on the complex geographical range of islands that make up the Canaries. The mist, which gently grazes the hillsides and deposits its moisture, is an almost permanent feature in this area. This humidity, combined with moderate temperatures, have enabled the forest to grow, which in turn has created a landscape that belongs to a world of daydreams and legend.

Legend is an important feature of the park. It was named after two young lovers who choose to end their lives rather than relinquish their love for one another. Gara and Jonay (the names of the two aboriginals who sacrificed their lives for love) choose a fairytale setting to end their romance.

The peak of Garajonay, at 1,487, metres is the highest point of the island and the park itself. From the summit, the green hillsides slope gently towards the north for several kilometres and then descend into the sea. Here, the visitor can expect to enjoy an unforgettable day complete with stunning views of rocks and impossible abysses, green leafy forests, peaceful brooks, shady trails and an in-depth lesson in natural sciences. Lime trees, 'palo blancos' (white sticks), 'viñátigos' (a typical tree of the region), laurel trees and an endless variety of species make up a symphony of green. The forest is also home to a multitude of birds (including the laurel pigeon and the sparrowhawk), small mammals such as shrews and bats, as well as lizards and a host of insects, all of which form part of the park's bustling community which UNESCO has declared a Heritage of Humanity area.

To enjoy this natural paradise, it is necessary to abandon the car and explore the full network of well signposted paths which pass through all the important areas of the park on foot. While walking, try to stay quiet and listen for the sounds given out by the many varied inhabitants of this enchanted forest. It is likely to be misty and humid resulting in millions of fine droplets of water, carried by the wind, trickling from the leaves and moss-covered tree trunks. When the sun catches these droplets, they form tiny kaleidoscopes which reflect all the colours of the rainbow.

Essential stop offs:

Mirador de Los Roques.- From this natural terrace, one of the few places offering  panoramic views of the park, you can admire the Agando and Ojila rocks, two geographic landmarks of La Gomera. Clear days offer magnificent views of the island of Tenerife, crowned by the summit of Teide.

Laguna Grande.- This is one of the most visited spots on the island. The lagoon is set in a clearing and is an ideal place to marvel at the wonders of the forest. A small network of short paths enables the visitor to explore the mysterious laurel forest. This area is also known as the Laguna de las Brujas (the witches' lagoon) as, according to legend, this is where these creatures of popular culture met to celebrate the witches' Sabbath.

Bosque del Cedro.- This is unquestionably the park's most important point of reference. The shadiest corners of the Gomeran laurel forest can be found here around the Cedro (cedar) brook. A particular highlight is the unusual square formed by the moss-covered tree trunks. We recommend continuing along the short path to Ermita del Cedro (shrine of the cedar), crossing the brook over the small wooden bridges that add to the charm of the place.

Centro de Interpretación del Juego de Bolas.- Through models and information boards, visitors who stop off at this small research centre can learn more about the National Park and its rich variety of botany and fauna, as well as the relationship between the Gomerans and their woodlands. The centre also has a shop and cafe, making it a perfect place for a short rest, while discovering more about this wonderful natural environment.
